Estimator/Designer – Structured Cabling

Summary

The Estimator/Designer is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates and innovative design solutions for structured cabling and low-voltage projects, with a focus on fiber optic networks, data center infrastructure (HAC, CAC, cage builds), and security systems. This dual-role position requires strong knowledge of cabling and data center environments, estimation and project management experience, and proven analytical skills to deliver cost-effective, functional designs that meet client needs, industry standards, and company objectives.

Primary Responsibilities

Estimate Development

  • Analyze RFPs, drawings, specifications, site conditions, and customer requirements to develop accurate labor and material takeoffs, BOMs, and project estimates.

  • Develop pricing and scope for structured cabling, fiber optic, copper, HAC/CAC distribution systems, data center cages, racks, containment, pathways, security, relocation, and change order work.

  • Apply appropriate labor units and productivity assumptions based on project requirements, installation conditions, and schedule.

  • Identify project risks, assumptions, exclusions, clarifications, and opportunities for value engineering.

  • Perform site walks as needed to validate scope and existing conditions.

  • Build proposals, pricing models, and scope narratives using Procore software, Bluebeam, and company templates.

  • Collaborate with sales, project management, engineering, and field operations to clarify scope and align pricing and execution strategy.

  • Submit completed bids and proposals for internal review and support awarded project handoff and post-award estimating needs.

  • Maintain pricing references, labor units, estimating templates, bid records, and other estimating resources.

Design

  • Create drawings, layouts, and renderings to support structured cabling, fiber backbones, racks and cabinets, cages, containment, pathways, and related infrastructure.

  • Develop practical, cost-effective designs that meet customer requirements, site conditions, safety requirements, and applicable industry standards, including TIA/EIA, BICSI, NEC, and AHJ requirements.

  • Support designs from concept through construction, incorporating customer feedback, field conditions, and value-engineering opportunities.

Proposal and Client Support

  • Develop clear proposal documents that communicate project scope, pricing, assumptions, exclusions, timelines, and other relevant project requirements.

  • Participate in customer scope reviews and technical discussions to clarify requirements, explain estimates, and address questions.

  • Provide technical guidance to customers and internal teams regarding proposed solutions, products, installation approaches, and project requirements.

Vendor and Supplier Coordination

  • Coordinate vendor and supplier RFQs to obtain competitive pricing, product information, availability, and lead times.

  • Maintain current knowledge of products, pricing, and technology related to structured cabling and data center infrastructure.

Project Planning and Collaboration

  • Participate in project planning, strategy, and handoff meetings to support successful project execution.

  • Work closely with sales, engineering, project management, service, relocation, and field operations throughout the estimating and design process.

  • Track bid outcomes and contribute to estimating

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED); technical or trade school preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience estimating structured cabling, fiber optic, data center, security, or low-voltage projects.
  • Strong knowledge of fiber, copper, HAC, CAC, and cage/containment systems.
  • Proficiency in estimation software (e.g., Procore) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proven work experience as an Estimator or Designer in low-voltage or data center environments.
  • Familiarity with financial and project management principles.
  • Strong ability to interpret construction documents and bid proposals.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Industry or manufacturer certifications (e.g., BICSI, Panduit, Corning) are a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based role with occasional site visits and client meetings.
  • Standard working hours with flexibility required based on project deadlines.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to use repetitive movements of the hands and fingers to operate a keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment
  • Visual acuity to read a computer screen, documents, and small print
  • Occasional standing, walking, or reaching with hands and arms
  • Ability to lift up to 10 – 20 pounds occasionally (such as files, office supplies or small equipment)
  • Ability to communicate effectively (speaking, hearing, and understanding)
  • Bending, stooping, kneeling occasionally
  • Ability to travel to meetings or training as required
