Location and Working Hours

  • Position is in Rocklin, CA
  • This is for the third shift (8:30pm to 5:30am), Sunday night to Friday morning.

Summary

  • Implement, install, repair, maintain, test, proof or adjust as needed all fiber optic cabling and related infrastructure in accordance with established customer procedures and policies.
  • Ensure maximum quality, peak performance, and reliability of all fiber optic cabling within a data center environment.
  • Responsible for all connectivity auditing and documentation related to fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Adhere to DCS standards for customer facility installs.
  • This person will be responsible for sites as assigned; this may include remote sites. This position reports to the Professional Services Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates all installation activities with the Data Center Manager.
  • Monitor, communicate, and perform corrective actions to resolve problems affecting the fiber related infrastructure.
  • Walk planned installations for footages and pathways and develop needed bill of materials as assigned.
  • Record and document fiber installations and create paths and diagrams as needed.
  • Perform and coordinate with other departments all testing and installation of fiber network components.
  • Perform quality-control inspections on new fiber network components received and or returned from the field for stocking.
  • Install and test fiber optic cabling, cross connects and associated patch panels.
  • Conducts inventory of fiber optic cabling and infrastructure and assemblies’ requests for quotes.
  • Maintains assigned tools and test equipment and records calibration logs.
  • Serves as on-call escalation for emergency issues and technical support as needed.
  • Performs plans and supervises cable mining activities within assigned areas.
  • Supervises one or more level I technicians in the performance of day-to-day tasks.
  • Build layouts and documents as-built information.
  • Maintains familiarity and enforces all workplace safety requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Professional Services Manager, this position may direct the various facilities technicians’ performance of duties on projects.
  • Leads, assigns, trains, schedules, and oversees work of other facilities’ technicians.
  • Establish and evaluate appropriate training requirements for staff.
  • Provide performance feedback as required to management on project status and assigned staff.

  • Must be able to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Travel to remote data centers required.
  • Must be willing to work rotating hours as needed and may be assigned to various shifts.
  • Understanding of fiber optic installation techniques.
  • Ability to interface with and take direction from onsite customer representatives

Education and Experience

A minimum High School Diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of (36) thirty-six months of related experience and/or training preferred. Experience leading multiple technicians over multiple projects is required. Experience within a data center is a must.

Communications Skills

Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex project documents. Ability to apply DCS installation standards and project tracking/management documents. Ability to effectively respond, verbally or written, to sensitive issues, complex inquiries, or complaints. Ability to make effective presentations and respond to questions from customers and managers. Requires a high level of commitment to customer service, whether coworkers or clients.

Other Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with a proactive approach to unusual occurrences. Requires good organizational skills, attention to detail and openness to new ideas and procedures. Experience with Visio and all MS Office software applications a plus.

  • Minimum of (2) two years fiber optic installation or assembly experience in a data center environment.
  • Understanding of fiber optic installation and testing standards as well as design layout best practices.
  • Ability to use various computer office software.

Scope of Responsibility

Decisions made with understanding of procedures, company policies and business practices to achieve general results. Responsible for setting and meeting work unit and/or project deadlines.

Working Conditions

Working conditions are normal for a data center environment. Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
